so i got myself recertified. and they changed a lot in the guidelines. which is good because theres so little that you have to do to perform CPR these days.
so the new guideline goes:
- ENVIRO SCAN (no fire, wire, gas, glass) - dont perform CPR if its not safe for you!
- activate 911 ->
- do ABC (airways, breathing, circulation) ->
- then start CPR - 2breaths:30 compressions for both adults and children/infants!!! the difference is that you dont have to compress/breathe into hard for the infants. repeat again & again until taking a break or help arrives.
- and you only get to check breathing/pulse again if you take a short break (no more than a minute to regroup after being tired).
- stop only til help arrives or takes over.
not bad eh?
i think all people should do CPR just like all people are taught to call 911 when an emergency happens. it really saves lives. did you know that a person has a good chance of survival if he gets CPR the first minute after cardiac arrest? think of the many people who die because they didn't get any kind of resuscitation after a heart attack. CPR's not rocket science.
if you are interested to get certified, call your local Red Cross chapter (if they offer such lessons) or check out this website: http://www.heart2heartcpr.com/
