The Globe and Mail has disabled commenting on the topic because of legal issues. And they do not describe the circumstances around this incident either.
So, I am gonna offer my two cents here.
Almost 2-yr old baby has ingested methadone and is in critical condition.
Now i dont know the context as to how this happened but I can only imagine the scenarios.
To those of you who do not know what methadone is, methadone is a substance that is given to drug abusers as a substitute for the drugs that they are used to ingest - the goal is so that they do not go into violent withdrawal symptoms while their body is getting rid of the toxic substance while they are on rehab. The thing is, methadone is also in in itself very lethal to those whose bodies are not used to these toxic substances.
Back to the story - how in hell can a kid get access to methadone? Isn't this sort of thing kept in a child-proof bottle in a child-safe medicine cabinet? I agree with not punishing recovering addicts by taking away their children (if the culprits are indeed the parent/s) but isn't there some sort of mechanism to keep these children safe? like home visits / home inspection from a mental health nurse / social work / family services to ensure that the place is safe from children?
I cannot imagine what the long-term damages are to this poor girl because of some people's apparent negligence and carelessness.
